The Three Connection Methods of Steel Structures

The Three Connection Methods of Steel Structures

The common connection methods in steel structures are welding, bolting, and riveting. With the widespread application of steel structures in commercial and industrial buildings, welding has become the most common connection method. High-strength bolted connections have become the most popular, while riveting is gradually being replaced by the former two methods and is rarely used in practical engineering projects.

common connection methods

Welding:

Butt welding: Two steel plates are welded together by butting their ends, commonly used to connect steel materials in the same direction.

Corner welding: Two steel materials are welded at an angle (usually 90 degrees), commonly used in frame structures and supporting structures.

T-welding: Used to connect two steel materials vertically, resembling the shape of the letter "T".

Spot welding and seam welding: Suitable for connecting thinner steel plates, commonly used for small steel components.

Bolted connection:

Ordinary bolted connection: Steel materials are connected using bolts and nuts, widely used in frame structures and the connection of steel columns and beams.

High-strength bolted connection: High-strength bolts (such as grade 8.8, 10.9 bolts) are used, capable of bearing larger loads, typically used for load-bearing structure connections.

Bolted connection

Preloaded bolted connection: The connection is preloaded to improve the bearing capacity, commonly used in connections requiring high precision and strength.

Riveted connection:
Rivets are inserted through the steel plates, and the ends of the rivets are pressed into shape using rivet hammers or mechanical riveting equipment to form a firm connection. Though less commonly used in modern engineering, it is still used in certain specific cases.
